You’ve probably found yourself reading an English article or watching a video on sustainability and thinking, “What is the Turkish equivalent of this term?” You searched through digital dictionaries and websites, only to realize that—despite all the effort—you still couldn’t find a reliable answer. That’s exactly why we created the Sürdürülebilir Çeviri project—to help you overcome this challenge!

Our glossary aims to be a comprehensive project that clearly explains key sustainability concepts, offers Turkish equivalent suggestions, and helps you stay up to date through tools such as our blog and newsletter.

We believe in a sustainable language for a sustainable world!

Sürdürülebilir Çeviri was launched with the voluntary participation of the Dijital Tercüme team—led by Senem Kobya and Ece Bilgen—together with translators from the 2024 summer Staj.rar internship program from across Türkiye.

Through source research and R&D efforts, supported by strong teamwork, collaboration, and a culture of volunteerism, we rapidly expanded the scope of our project. We developed a comprehensive terminology set on solid foundations and designed our website accordingly.

Led by Senem Kobya, we developed a ready-to-use glossary—but we didn’t stop there. Driven by our dedication and passion for the translation profession, we set out to build a comprehensive project focused on sustainability.

We are here to provide reliable Turkish equivalents for all the sustainability terms you need.

Why did we feel the need for the Sustainability Glossary, and why does it matter so much to us? Let us explain:

• First and foremost, we approach the issue through our identity as translators and once again underscore the importance of terminology. Unfortunately, inconsistencies, gaps in equivalents, and semantic ambiguity are still frequently encountered in Turkish within this field. This, in turn, highlights the clear need for a standardized terminology glossary—and for digital access to that glossary.
• In addition, sustainability is still an area where sufficient public awareness has yet to be established in our country. Likewise, reaching people across all segments of society, delivering accurate education, and fostering awareness all begin with language. Equally important is serving as a reliable reference source for academics working in this field.
• Finally, we believe in the importance of a platform that fosters knowledge sharing and helps broaden the pursuit of a greener world—and we are committed to playing our part in making that happen.

Services we offer within the scope of our glossary:

• We aim to help you easily find the terms you’re looking for in Turkish, along with their alternative equivalents, in our glossary;
• Allow you to gain deeper insights into these terms within their proper contexts; and
• Enable you to see how these terms are used in sentences and compare them with English sources.

In addition to our glossary, we aim to keep your interest and knowledge in the field alive through regularly published sustainability blog content, carefully prepared by our team and accessible via our website.

Let’s not forget: sustainable language for a sustainable world!

While developing our glossary as part of the Sürdürülebilir Çeviri project, we approached our work with an awareness of linguistic intersectionality and the interconnected fields in which sustainability operates. With this perspective, we compiled both core social concepts that should be integrated into everyday life and more specialized, technical sustainability terms for you.

While we aim for our glossary to be accessible to everyone, we also envision it being used across academic research and professional settings, serving as a reliable guide whenever sustainability-related terms and concepts come into focus.  

Sustainability is an inherently intersectional field whose integration across all sectors is of critical importance. In developing the Sustainability Glossary, we kept this reality in mind and focused on addressing the sustainability-related terminology needs of a wide range of sectors.

Within the Sustainability Glossary, you can find terminology related to climate, environment, economics, politics, biology, chemistry, and energy, as well as terms from a wide range of industrial sectors.

At the core of our project—launched with the aim of creating a glossary dedicated to sustainability—lies our identity as translators. For this reason, we are committed to contributing to both the Turkish language and the field of sustainability by bringing global standards and terminology into Turkish.

Our glossary serves as a practical guide for professionals working in the field of sustainability. Through our project, users can access the most appropriate Turkish equivalents for the terms they frequently need, enabling stronger collaboration, clearer communication, and greater transparency in sustainability projects and reports; they can also broaden the scope of their work through the new areas each term in our glossary helps unlock.   

We aspire for the terms we have compiled and developed for the Sustainability Glossary to become fully embedded in Turkish, and for sustainability itself to gain such prominence that the terms in the glossary are used naturally and frequently in everyday life.

Alongside developing this project as a resource that can be used across all disciplines and sectors in pursuit of our ideals, we also place great importance on highlighting—through our blog posts, newsletter, and shared content—the need for sustainability to be embraced by every discipline.
