Project Background and Purpose
Have you ever paused while reading an article, listening to a talk, or watching a video on sustainability and thought, “What is the Turkish equivalent of this term?” For us, this is almost a professional reflex. As translators, our minds are wired to catch every word and focus on finding the right equivalent. In recent years, solving this puzzle has become increasingly challenging, as translation demands related to sustainability have grown significantly. As a company, as we became directly engaged with the subject through our social responsibility efforts, began actively working toward three of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and completed global and local sustainability certification trainings across the organization—from senior management to our internship team—we realized that while many environmental, climate, and ecology glossaries exist, there is no comprehensive and reliable resource dedicated specifically to sustainability terminology.
Recognizing this gap was not enough; we needed a foundation we could rely on with full confidence in its accuracy. That is why we started from the field. We attended four different sustainability summits and asked over 1,000 participants what they considered to be the Turkish equivalent of the frequently used industry term greenwashing. Everyone was familiar with the subject, had a strong command of English, and was a native speaker of Turkish. We expected a single, clear translation—but instead received ten different answers. Far from finding common ground, it felt as though we were speaking entirely different languages at the same table.
We kept trying. We conducted a new survey on carbon emission. The debate over whether it should be rendered as “salım, salınım, or emisyon” continued for weeks. When we completed our trilogy with downcycling, it became clear that the issue was not merely which word to choose, but how that term functions as an equivalent—its context, connotations, and manner of use.
Ultimately, this entire process boiled down to a key realization: If we are experiencing confusion, it is not merely our own challenge, but a shared issue across the entire industry. And someone had to step in and take ownership of the issue. And that is exactly how the Sürdürülebilir Çeviri Project came to life—its origin story.
At the heart of our project is a commitment to presenting each term together with its references, examining it from a linguistic perspective, testing alternatives, and validating the final equivalent. Our efforts aim for far more than individual word choices: To help create a shared language of sustainability.
Vision and Mission
Our vision is to build a bridge between academia and industry by ensuring that sustainability concepts are embedded in Turkish in an accurate, consistent, and accessible manner; our mission is to contribute to the development of sustainable language policies through reference-based, interdisciplinary terminology studies, as well as training and awareness-raising activities. Within this framework, our core approach goes beyond merely translating terminology; it involves testing terms linguistically, exploring alternatives, and offering users well-grounded recommendations.
Terminology Selection and Surveys — How We Work
Another key element that strengthens the project is ongoing translator training and capacity-building efforts. Training programs delivered through DT Enstitü are designed to support translators in adapting to new processes and sustainability terminology. Collaborative initiatives with academia have also made it easier for both students and industry professionals to engage with the project.

Sürdürülebilir Çeviri Summit I — Summary and Contributions
Held on May 22, 2025 and hosted by Istanbul Beykent University, the Sürdürülebilir Çeviri Summit I marked a significant milestone in demonstrating how the project has been received by the field. The summit brought the challenges of rendering global sustainability terminology into Turkish to the table through opening remarks, three focused sessions, and a terminology survey. During the event, representatives from academia and industry came together to share their perspectives on topics such as artificial intelligence, corporate communication, and the intercultural transfer of terminology.
The sessions and speakers featured at the summit were as follows:
In the session titled “Sustainable Localization in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” Google Senior Language Manager Hüseyin Mergan and Decathlon Türkiye Localization Team Leader Elif Yıldırım Beşkardeş;
In the session titled “Corporate Communication, Transformation, and Sustainability,” Borusan Boru Project Manager Çağıl Zehni and CO₂Notr Founding Partner Dr. Gökhan Türker;
In the session titled “The Transformative Power of Language: Sustainability from Terminology to Meaning,” Senem Kobya, CEO of Dijital Tercüme, and Dr. Angelika Loginova of Lomonosov Moscow State University shared their knowledge and experience with participants, addressing interdisciplinary questions with great clarity.
In addition, esteemed scholars—Dr. İlkiz Tülek, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sara Bokaie, Dr. Sertaç Doğanay, Prof. Dr. F. Yeşim Ekinci, Prof. Dr. Emine Aksoydan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rana Kahraman Duru, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Çetin, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Menekşe Ahbab, Ph.D.—supported the project with their insights and commentary.
The execution of both the summit and the project was made possible through the efforts of the project team— Bilal Şahinoğlu, Nefise Zehra Bayar, and Fulya İncirliler—together with Beyza Belge, who served as the project coordinator on behalf of the main sponsor, Dijital Tercüme, as well as the academics providing scholarly support and the many volunteers involved. Beyond academic support, university hosting, and main sponsorship, field feedback, survey participation, and social media engagement further expanded the project’s visibility and reach. Without this collective effort, it would not have been possible for the terminology work to progress at this pace.
Why It Matters
Sustainability decisions are effective only when they are communicated to the public, investors, and stakeholders through clear and accurate language. Incorrect or inconsistent use of terminology can create confusion for the intended audience and, in the worst case, lead to misdirection in practice. For this reason, linguistic accuracy is both a technical and an ethical requirement in the implementation of sustainability policies. Therefore, terminology must be selected with care, grounded in reliable references, and tested through collaboration between industry and academia. The Sürdürülebilir Çeviri project aims to address precisely this gap.
Next Steps
At the outset of the project, volunteering, collaboration, and transparent use of sources were central; today, we have expanded our work to include a comprehensive terminology database and structured content creation processes.
Our goals for expanding the project include growing the terminology database, establishing collaborations with a broader range of industry stakeholders, and publishing open-access resources and sustainability-focused translation training modules. We will also continue to ensure that translation remains transparent, traceable, and reliable by providing references to support each term selection. We believe that this approach will strengthen sustainability at both linguistic and practical levels, contributing to a clearer sustainability discourse in Turkish and its effective translation into practice.
